My 17 yr old and i have been dealing with MRSA for the past year, fortunately my child was able to be treated as an outpatient however i became very seriously ill. From 8/06 to 5/07 (9 months) I was hospitalized 4 times, developed osteomyelitis in my foot requiring 4 surgeries in 2 weeks and surgeons planned amputation of my foot but I finally began to improve. My biggest concern is our pets, one month before I was hosp. the first time one of my male cats (neutered 2 yr old) developed an absess below one eye that had “tunneled” to his cheekbone, fortunately surgery and meds allowed him to recover with no further problems. The next month while in the hosp. the brother of the cat that was ill was found dead in my home, no apparent injury no prior health problems, no evidence of intentional or accidental injury. He had hidden below the basement stairs. I have heard animals do that when they know they are dying. Does anyone know if my cat could have infected his twin and myself? I am consumed with guilt thinking that I may have unknowingly infected them? I talked to 2 different vets and both said they never wear gloves or do ANY infection control because “animals can’t spread to humans”. I watched the surgery on my cat, no sterile techniques used (I am a nurse) , no gloves and tap water from a sink was used to irrigate his absess. This was a large Veterinary center!

I am wondering if you could kindly help me with a delicate MRSA situation? I am a step-father of a lovely 12-year old girl whose biological father has MRSA and just bought a pet dog. I have a concern in that our toddler (girl) twins (ages 2.8 months) and step-daughter might somehow contact MRSA if she goes over his flat/apartment for her weekly visit and becomes a carrier. To make matters worse, he has bought a young puppy who I am concerned will also spread the MRSA if it is active and licking her face, tc.
His MRSA Profile:
- 41 year-old male with weak immune system, diabetes, heart defects, elephant man’s disease
- He recently came back from the hospital (a week ago) and has MRSA skin colonization.
- He has started taking Zyvox, Bhishex, Musciprin, each day for 10 days.
- He doesn not have welts on his skin and has nurses come in 5 days a week.
- He also has a webcam set up for his ocassional seizures and any other event
Any advice to give would be much appreciated!
